Multi-head Passive Sonar Trials Success

by | Oct 8, 2024 | Sentinel, News

Following successful demonstrations of our unique Simultaneous In-band Active and Passive Sonar capability (SInAPS®) at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Wavefront is delighted to announce the completion of its latest round of proving trials for its multi-head passive Sentinel IDS® sonar capability.

Building on our real-world experience with SInAPS®, our unique Simultaneous In-band Active and Passive Sonar capability, we have developed a multi-head passive capability using existing hardware. During recent proving trials in a live commercial port environment, Sentinel repeatedly geolocated and tracked targets passively.

This latest development of Sentinel builds a further level of capability into Sentinel, which is already delivering an unparalleled level of protection. With Sentinel, both passive and active capabilities are delivered from the same Sentinel sonar head.

Designed to pick up on the sounds made by divers, vehicles and vessels, both on the surface and subsurface, this new capability extends the envelope of protection out beyond that of active sonar systems. Ideal for large infrastructure protection such as shore-based power generation sites, desalination plants, commercial or military harbours and offshore wind farms. Installation is similar to that of a current multi-head Sentinel system of which there are hundreds installed and operating today.

Key highlights:

  • Repeatedly geolocated and tracked targets passively within a live commercial port environment
  • Passive tracking using a network of sonar heads capable of operating passively, actively or uniquely, simultaneously actively and passively

We are currently preparing Sentinel IDS for another US National Agency demonstration. This further underlines Sentinel’s market leading position, protecting more assets around the world than any other Intruder Detection Sonar.
